The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), an interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, university level research center, was established in August 1988 in response to the U.S. Department of Transportation's University Transportation Centers Program and in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

VTTI’s primary mission is applied research, accomplished by attracting a multi-disciplinary core of researchers and by educating students in the latest transportation technologies through hands-on research and experience. VTTI has garnered a reputation as one of the leading transportation research institutions in the nation. Its cutting-edge research is effecting significant change in public policies in the transportation domain on the state, national, and international level.

VTTI's premier research facility is the Virginia Smart Road, a closed test-bed track designed for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), human factors and safety research.  The road is built to VDOT and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) specifications.  The Smart Road is a highly capable and adaptable research test track featuring: 12 different pavements types for surface properties research; the ability to make rain, snow and fog; a lighting section that can reproduce approximately 95 percent of any lighting conditions on any roadway in the U.S.; and a controlled intersection for crash avoidance testing.
