Nicholas D. Stone, Ph.D.

In addition to serving on the RDT, Stone is Deputy Director for Virginia Tech's National Capital Region Operations. He was formerly Director of Education and Outreach for Virginia Tech's International Institute for Information Technology, where he was responsible for developing IT-based research collaborations, building Virginia Tech's IT programs in the region, and helping to establish the university's international IT programs in India. As a faculty member at Texas A&M University and Virginia Tech, he developed research programs focusing on simulation, artificial intelligence, planning, and decision support systems.

Responsibilities

Stone's current role in the RDT is to assist in developing new activities related to homeland security and technology and in information technology. In that capacity, he works with faculty not only to connect with agencies and industry but also to help them formulate partnerships. As an example, Stone helped broker a partnership between Virginia Tech, Arlington County, and the intelligence community to develop a role for university faculty in testing, developing, and experimenting with IT technologies for emergency management and national security that has generated more than $1 million in sponsored research over the last three years. His responsibilities also include working with the Director and the Research Analyst to establish new research directions, particularly as they relate to the intelligence community, homeland security, and information technology.
