Research Leader
Joseph R. Guerci, Ph.D.
Guerci is a part-time appointee on the RDT. His experience includes more than 23 years in advanced technology research and development in government, industry, and academia. His government service includes a recent seven-year term with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where he held the positions of Program Manager, Deputy Office Director, and subsequently, Office Director of the Special Projects Office (SPO). In these capacities, Guerci was involved in the inception, research, development, execution, and ultimate transition of next generation defense technologies for surveillance and reconnaissance, protection against weapons of mass destruction (WMD), tactical missile defense, space defense, and assured urban operations. Additionally, he has held senior engineer and scientist positions in industry and was recently Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for SAIC’s Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) Group. A member of the IEEE Radar Systems panel, Guerci is also a Fellow of the IEEE for “Contributions to Advanced Radar Theory and its Embodiment in Real-World Systems,” and holds eight U.S. patents. He is a member of several industrial, academic, and government advisory boards including the National Security Agency (NSA) Advisory Board’s (NSAAB) Scientific Advisory Panel for ELINT.
Responsibilities
Guerci’s responsibilities range across a wide array of defense related technologies and sciences including, but not limited to, sensors, materials, system engineering, informatics, and complex systems. He helps Virginia Tech faculty engage defense related agencies such as DARPA, the intelligence communities, and private defense contractors.
