Government and International Affairs
Virginia Tech's Government and International Affairs program, one of three programs within the School of Public and International Affairs, offers a Master of Public and International Affairs (MPIA) and a Ph.D. in Governance and Globalization with an international affairs and cultural (geo)politics focus. The MPIA is a 36-credit academic-oriented master's degree with a focus on international politics, critical geopolitics, international political economy, and cultural identity politics.
Courses are taught in person and online all year round, with the face-to-face classes meeting in the evenings at Virginia Tech's Old Town Alexandria campus.
The majority of part-time students are able to complete the degree within three years taking 12 credit hours (four courses) per year. A background in public and international affairs is helpful but not a requirement to enter the program. The curriculum is designed around foundation courses, then the selection of elective courses in different dimensions of global security. A Research Methods and Discourse Analysis course prepares students for a final 10,000 word Major Paper as their final project.
