Public and International Affairs
The Master of Public and International Affairs (MPIA) is offered by Virginia Tech in the National Capital Region through the Government and International Affairs program, which is part of the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA). The MPIA is a 36-credit academic-oriented master's degree with a focus on globalization, global security, and transnational civil society.
The interdisciplinary MPIA curriculum is designed as a comprehensive program of study to empower individuals in public, private or nonprofit organizations to meet the global governance challenges of the 21st century. Policy problems that transcend political boundaries require broad, international, flexible thinking from aspiring organizational leaders. Courses are taught in person and online all year round, with the face-to-face classes meeting in the evenings at Virginia Tech's Old Town Alexandria campus.
The majority of part-time students are able to complete the degree within three years taking 12 credit hours (four courses) per year. A background in public and international affairs is helpful but not a requirement to enter the program. The curriculum is designed around foundation courses, then the selection of a specialization and the development of skills to write a capstone research paper or practicum (3 credit hours).
