Introduction to Library Resources for the National Capital Region

This workshop will address accessing and using online resources that are available for faculty, staff, and students in the National Capital Region through the University Libraries at Virginia Tech.

Topics will include:

  • Services at the Resource Center Library at the Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church
  • Accessing Databases and Indexes from Off campus
  • E-Journals (titles available electronically online)
  • Addison (the library catalog)
  • ILLiad – online request form for materials from Blacksburg and through Interlibrary Loan
  • Planning your research

EndNote X1 - An Introduction to EndNote for the National Capital Region

EndNote is a software product that allows researchers to save and organize results of database searches or lists of bibliographic references. EndNote can be used in conjunction with Microsoft Word to format in-text citations and bibliographies.

This session will include basic EndNote “how to” skills such as: creating a library, entering references manually, exporting references from online databases, editing records for accuracy, using import filters, creating groups (subsets of your library), editing output styles, using term lists, attaching files, setting preferences, and Cite While You Write.

EndNote and APA 5th Output Style - National Capital Region

This session will include some of the same elements as the introductory session (exporting, importing, editing references, setting preferences), but will focus more on getting references to format correctly according to the examples provided in the Publication Manual of the APA, 5th ed. and the APA Style Guide to Electronic References (2007)

If you do not have a copy of EndNote X1 software, bring your laptop to the session and have it loaded to your computer. Desktop users can borrow a CD from the library. You must be currently affiliated with Virginia Tech to download the software.
