National Capital Region Closing and Delay Policy
All Virginia Tech facilities and operations in the region act as one regarding delays or closings due to inclement weather or other situations. The decision follows the recommendation for the Northern Virginia Center, which is based on the following guidelines.
DELAYED OPENINGS or MORNING CLOSINGS:
The final decision to cancel classes, and/or close or delay opening buildings is made by 6:30 a.m. CLOSING AND DELAY INFORMATION can be accessed on the NVC weather information line (703/538-8325), the NVC and NCR listservs, the NVC and NCR websites, www.washingtonpost.com, local television networks, and on WAMU 88.5 and WETA radio stations.
EVENING CLASS CANCELLATIONS:
The final decision to cancel evening classes is made by 2:30 p.m. Information is posted in the same outlets as above.
Some things to remember:
1) Safety first, but communication a close second. We're broadly scattered in the National Capital Region, and the weather in Sterling can be very different from the weather in Arlington. If you feel it is unsafe to venture out of your neighborhood, liberal leave (or choosing not to attend class) is always an option, but you must contact your supervisor or instructor.
2) Faculty who cancel classes when the center is open must notify their students and Facilities. If you are located at NVC, signs can be posted on the classroom doors if you cc: facilities@vt.edu when you e-mail your student list.
If, for some reason, a class or event is held despite the announced closing, we must ensure that students, faculty or staff who follow the posted notice for the region are in no way penalized for failure to attend.
